How To Enjoy Durians Without Going Broke

Hate it or love it, you can’t deny that many people in South East Asia go absolutely bonkers for durians. In spite of the exorbitant price tags that make it one of the most expensive fruits in the world, even people who don’t earn very much would pay good money just to indulge in the experience of eating the king of fruits!

Just a few pieces of D24 or Musang King can reach up to a few hundred in Malaysia and we’ve heard Singaporeans paying as much as SGD$200 for an exceptional fruit.

Amazing Quality, Blowout Prices

With prices like that, how would anybody with a preference for durian be able to afford to eat much of it? Meet Mr. Lawrence, a retired prison warden who curiously owns his own durian farm that has produced some great fruits this year.

Obviously we hope he didn’t plant an orchardful of spiky durians so that he can hurl it at us when we misbehave. We don’t know why he sells his special durians at half the market price, but he does!

I don’t claim to be a durian nutter, but I can tell a good durian from a bad one. This was good because the flesh was plump, creamy, fragrant and sweet. One of the features of Mr. Lawrence’s durian is that the seeds are not round but flat.

It’s not quite a Musang but for 25 fabulous ringgit for the whole fruit, I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts picking them up to aim them at those who complain!

WHERE TO FIND HIM

He parks his van at Karamunsing most days but you should call him at 012-829-8935 for exact directions and to avoid disappointment.

Remember not to eat this when you intend to get close to someone, else your gas-highness will make you unpopular. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
