Vegetarian Restaurants in Kota Kinabalu

VEGETARIAN/VEGAN
With the red tide problem still gnawing at our consciousness, there is no better time to eat vegetarian food than now. Moreover, many people will go on a meat fast this weekend in preparation for Easter. So here’s a list of vegetarian restaurants in Kota Kinabalu.

1. Living Seed Restaurant, Penampang

We love this place, because the food is delicious, cheap and cheerful. Where else can you get yummy mixed economy rice for RM4.50 (with brown rice as an option), and enjoy the comforts of air-conditioning and a hygienic ambiance? Easily our favorite vegetarian restaurant in KK.
What to try: Love their seaweed fried rice and vegetarian tom yum (pictured above). Yums-oh-yums!

2. City Vegetarian, Lintas

Situated in Lintas, this restaurant begins accepting swarms of hungry customers 15 minutes before it’s official opening time at 8:00am. We were shocked to see that at 7:55am, their maifun tray is empty and already the cook is frying up the refill. Their kinchi mian also has some Hakka nyong tiu foo, using vegetarian-meat in place of real-meat of course. They also have vegetarian nasi lemak, Malaysian dishes that are made to order.

3. Natural Green House, Citymall

If you find yourself in Citymall, NGH is an organic food grocer with a small kitchen and some tables at the back of their store. They make a decent fried brown rice that is scented with sesame oil, and topped with bits of chopped organic vegetables. You can also get set lunches for under RM15.
What To Try: If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also a green-herb soup dish called Hakka Pestle Tea (pictured above). But be warned it’s an acquired taste.

4. Wisma Merdeka Vegetarian Stall

Arguably one of the more popular vegetarian stalls in KK, you can get vegan and lacto-ovo dishes here. Try to go between 11:30am – 1:30pm if you want the food fresh, warm, and pleasant. Otherwise, freshness is a bit of a ball-toss.

How To Get There

Wisma Merdeka Vegetarian Stall
Wisma Merdeka 2F Food Court, Jalan Tun Razak (at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens)
Kota Kinabalu Malaysia
Restaurant Hours: Breakfast and Lunch

5. Restoran Sayuran Good Friends, Inanam

We kind of stumbled upon this one. It’s just 2 doors down from the famous Kin Hwa roasted meat rice shop. I can’t really say much about it except that it’s a standard vegetarian coffee shop with Malaysian dishes that you can order from the kitchen, and an economy rice spread for brunch and lunch that is sans-meat.

How To Get There

Restoran Sayuran Good Friends
Ground Floor, Block C, Phase 1,
Lot 3-0, Inanam Business Center, Jalan Inanam
Kota Kinabalu Malaysia 88450
Tel: 012-8310981
Restaurant Hours: Breakfast and Lunch

  1. Hi, I am going to KK at the end of OCT and would like to stay closer to vegetarian resturant so do you have any suggestion where I should stay?

  2. There’s no major vegetarian restaurants right in town, but you can always go for the vegetarian stall at Wisma Merdeka (but it closes early)! Otherwise, there are a few small hotels in the Lintas area (near City Vegetarian Restaurant) which would be great for your dietary requirements but you’d need to pretty much take a cab everywhere you want to go. You can also just pick vegetarian items from a non-vege restaurant of make special requests at eateries. Most places would be pretty accommodating! Hope that helps!

    • Thank you for your reply!

  3. im going to KK near kingfisher.. any vegetarian rest. nearby?

    • I think there’s one somewhere at Kingfisher. Otherwise, at 1B they have a Hong Kong Recipe, which has an updated menu featuring vegetarian options :)

  4. There are 2 vegetarian restaurants in Kingfisher. In the city centre, there is another one in Centre Point located at the basement.
